How Aware Are You?
I recently read a book by Anthony De Mello called Awareness. I highly recommend this book. In this book it helps you to work through the process of awareness. Awareness is a fundamental piece of our spirituality and as many reading know this is the foundation for our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
We often say or hear someone else say to be present, to be grateful for the here and now! But what does that really mean?
I cannot begin to explain it all in one short blog but here are some highlights that may help you.
Become the observer
I’ve talked about this before but the idea is when you experience a challenging or negative situation to come outside of yourself, almost like you are watching yourself. Watch what you are doing, thinking, feeling and see it. You don’t need to try and change it simply watch. This starts to raise your awareness of how you are reacting. Without having to try you begin to see the situation differently. You begin to understand!
Don’t attached to people, experiences or things
This is tricky to wrap your head around. We have been conditioned to attach to stuff to make us happy. We think we need this or the other thing to make us happy. Even though someone says “happiness is an inside job” (which it is) we still yearn for more. The more is NOT stuff! The more is awareness! Happiness is not dependent on anything or anyone else but you. Think of a time you wanted something SO bad only to be crushed when you did not get it! Why would you put yourself through that suffering? If only you had set the vision and then allowed instead of attaching to the idea that you need that particular outcome to be happy. When you become more aware you begin to see that you can be absolutely joy filled right here right now. When we begin to let go of our expectations we begin to feel more flow and ease in our lives.
